황규태 《비포 블로우 업》 사진집
경향신문의 기자였던 황규태(b.1938)는 친구를 따라간 미국대사관에서 별 기대 없이 넣어본 이민 신청 서류가 통과되어
미국에 가기로 합니다. 값싼 화물선을 타고 40일 만에 미국 샌디에이고에 도착한 황규태는 현지 사진 현상소에서
암실 기사로 일하며 처음으로 컬러 현상을 접하였는데요. 그곳에서 일하며 필름을 태우고, 겹쳐서 인화하고,
다른 사진을 갖다 붙이는 등의 장난을 치며 다양한 실험을 한 황규태는 이후 디지털 몽타주, 컬러 필름 버닝, 합성, 픽셀 등의
사진 작업을 통해 '한국 아방가르드 사진의 선구자'로 자리매김합니다.
특히 그의 '블로우업(bLowUp)' 시리즈는 마치 풍선을 부풀리듯 1960년대 초 본인 사진의 부분을 포토샵으로 잘라서 확대합니다.
이 시리즈는 원래의 사진과는 전혀 다른, 예기치 않았던 결과물을 만들어내며 2002년에 1960년대를 새롭게 해석하는 도전적인 작업이
됩니다. 86세의 나이에 여전히 매킨토시 앞에 앉아 사진을 ‘작업’ 중인 황규태는 이번에 『비포 블로우 업』이라는 '블로우업'을 통해
사진을 확대하기 이전의 원사진 170점을 실은 사진집을 출간하였습니다.

Hwang Gyu-Tae 《Before Blow Up》 photo book
When HWANG Gyutae (b.1938) was a reporter for the Kyunghyang Shinmun, he put in immigration application documents without
much expectation at the U.S. Embassy, where he followed his friend. As the papers passed, he suddenly decided to go to the U.S.
After arriving in San Diego in the U.S. in 40 days on a cheap cargo ship, HWANG first encountered the color phenomenon while
working as a darkroom photographer at a local photo lab. He works there and conducts playful and diverse experiments, like
burning films, printing them repeatedly, and attaching different photos to them.
Since then, HWANG has established himself as a "pioneer of Korean avant-garde photography" through photography
such as digital montage, color film burning, synthesis, and pixels.
In particular, his "bLowUp" series enlarges photoshopped portions of his photos from the early 1960s as if inflating a balloon.
The series is a challenging 2002 interpretation of the 1960s, producing unexpected results that are completely different
from the original photos. HWANG Gyutae, still sitting in front of Macintosh at the age of 86 and 'working' on his photos,
has now published a photo collection of 170 original photos before expanding them through his 『Before Blow up』.
