유키 사에구사 《어디에도 없는》 전시 도록
유키 사에구사(b. 1987)는 유채와 템페라를 주재료로 한 회화 연작을 중심으로 다양한 재료 및 매체를 실험하는
작가입니다. 사에구사는 개인의 복합적인 기억 및 관점에 의해 의식 속에서 재구성된 관념적 세계의 풍경을 선보입니다.
화폭에 담긴 장면들은 “누군가의 마음속에 존재하지만, 어디에도 없는 장소”에 관한 생각에서 비롯된 것으로 사실처럼
정교하게 묘사된 각각의 장면은 개인의 일상적 경험, 주관적 기억 및 상상의 불확실성과 모호함을 역설적으로 드러냅니다.
세필로 정밀하게 쌓아 올린 풍경의 곳곳에서 목격되는 만화적인 소동물은 작가와 관객의 투영체입니다.
사에구사는 캔버스 외에도 개인적으로 수집한 판지와 병풍 등의 재료를 회화의 지지체로 활용하는데,
작가의 표현에 따르면 이 재료들은 “한 번 쓰임을 다하여 버려질 예정이던 사물”입니다. 사에구사는 지지체 표면의 주름과 얼룩을
‘재료의 기억(素材の記憶)’으로 보고, 그 위에 그림을 그리는 행위를 통하여 저마다의 재료가 가진 고유한 기억과
본인의 생각 및 몸짓의 흔적을 뒤섞어 ‘어디에도 없는’ 자신만의 화면을 구축합니다.
본 서적은 전시 《어디에도 없는》을 위해 출판된 전시 도록입니다.
이번 전시는 특유의 섬세한 필치가 돋보이는 유키 사에구사의 작품세계를 다채롭게 선보입니다.
7월 10일부터 8월 17일까지 아라리오갤러리 3층과 4층에서 진행되는 개인전
《어디에도 없는》에서는 유키 사에구사의 회화 30점과 병풍 4점 등 총 34점의 작품을 만나볼 수 있습니다.
Yuki SAEGUSA 《Not Even on Ship》 exhibition catalogue
Yuki SAEGUSA (b. 1987) is an artist known for her series of paintings that primarily use oil and tempera, experimenting
with various materials and media. SAEGUSA’s works present landscapes of an ideational world, consciously reconstructed
through complex personal memories and perspectives. The scenes on SAEGUSA’s canvases stem from thoughts about
“a place that exists in someone’s mind but nowhere in reality”. Each meticulously depicted scene paradoxically reveals
the uncertainties and ambiguities of personal daily experiences, subjective memories, and imagination.
Small animals with cartoonish forms represent projections of the artist and the audience are seen in the finely detailed landscapes.
SAEGUSA also uses cardboard and folding screens to support her paintings. She said, “These materials were once used and
destined to be discarded." She thoughts of the wrinkles and stains on these surfaces as the ‘memories of the materials
(素材の記憶)’. By painting on them, she merges the unique memories of each material with her thoughts and gestures,
creating a unique scene that is ‘a place where there is no place.’
This publication is the exhibition catalogue for 《Not Even on Ship》.
The exhibition highlights SAEGUSA’s characteristic delicate brushwork.
The current exhibition at ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL, spanning the 3rd and 4th floors,
features 34 works, including 30 paintings and 4 folding screens from 10 July to 17 August 2024.
