권오상 《New Structure and Relief》 전시 도록

권오상(b. 1974)은 아이소핑크로 형태를 조각한 뒤, 사진을 부착하고 코팅을 더해 최종적인 표면을 완성하는 〈데오도란트 타입〉(1998-)

연작을 처음으로 선보였습니다. 이 시리즈는 사진 조각으로도 불리며, 조각의 정체성에 대한 물음과 그에 대한 시각적 대안의

제시였다는 점에서 주목 받았습니다. 이후 그는 다양한 조형적, 기법적 연구를 지속해 왔습니다.

개인전 《New Structure and Relief》에서는 새로운 매체를 탐구하는 실험으로써 조각 연작을 선보였습니다.

〈뉴스트럭쳐〉(2015) 연작은 알렉산더 칼더(1898-1976)의 〈스테빌〉을 차용하여, 일상생활에서 채집한 사물의 이미지를 확대하고

이를 평면적으로 제작한 뒤 입체적으로 구조화한 작품입니다. 〈릴리프〉(2016) 연작은 잡지 ‘월페이퍼’에서 수집한 이미지 중

일부를 선별하고, 즉흥적으로 덩어리를 붙여나가며 완성한 작품으로, 나무 고유의 결을 살리고 구조와 매체적 특성을

더욱 강조했습니다. 이 두 연작은 이미지 수집에 대한 작가의 욕망과 특유의 무의식적인 자율적 구축을 통해 새로운

조각적 상상력을 드러내며, 조각 매체에 대한 근본적인 질문과 형식을 효과적으로 풀어냅니다.

본 서적은 권오상의 개인전을 위해 출판된 전시 도록입니다.

개인전 New Structure and Relief의 작품들을 감상하실 수 있습니다.

GWON Osang New Structure and Relief exhibition catalog

GWON Osang (b. 1974) experimented and introduced his Deodorant Type (1998-) series, which are also called photo sculptures, where he carved shapes from isopink, then attached photographs and added a coating to create the final surface.

This approach not only challenged the identity of sculpture but also provided a clear visual alternative,

garnering immediate attention upon its introduction. GWON has continuously presented various sculptural and technical studies.

GWON’s solo exhibition New Structure and Relief presented a series of sculptures and an experimental exploration of new media.

New Structure (2015) series appropriates Alexander Calder’s (1898-1976) Stabile, enlarging images of objects

collected from everyday life, rendering them in a flat form, and then structuring them into three-dimensional compositions.

Relief (2016) series selects images from the magazine “Wallpaper” and completes the works by spontaneously attaching masses, emphasizing both the natural grain of the wood and the structural and material characteristics of the medium.

These two series reveal a new sculptural imagination through the artist’s desire to collect images and their unique,

unconscious autonomous construction, effectively addressing fundamental questions and forms related to the medium of sculpture.

This publication is a collection of a solo exhibition of GWON Osang, New Structure and Relief

held at ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL from July 7 to August 21, 2016.
